Patrick Henry is known for several things including being the first post-colonial governor of Virginia, one of the founding fathers of our great country, and his “Give me Liberty, or give me death!” speech. However, we should truly appreciate him for quotes like this, “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!” Our forefathers most certainly fought for our freedom as an independent country, but also for our freedom to take the gospel to others.
I believe that it’s very important to us as we celebrate this Independence Day this year and as we move closer to this year’s Presidential election to remember the fact that even as negative as things seem to be in our country currently that we are a FREE nation. Instead of focusing on all of the negativity, I believe that there’s two promises that we should focus on instead: 1) that if we want to see negative things change, the only thing that can change it is the gospel of Jesus Christ and that it’s our responsibility to spread it (Mark 16:15) and 2) that the Lord is in control of placing HIS CHOSEN leaders into their position to further HIS purpose, plan and will (Romans 13:1 and Daniel 4:17).
